Promise Keepers

Promise KeepersOne of the most important responsibilities of a university, after teaching, is to ensure that students are aware of all their rights, and well-versed in handling all aspects of college life. Bihar College in India has failed to meet this responsibility. There have been reports in the past that Bihar College has not kept to its promises and has neglected to keep a record of students' accomplishments. In several cases, students are simply asked to make a report of their scores after some time. It is clear that there is no monitoring mechanism in place to make sure that students are learning the subjects, completing assignments and passing exams.Bihar College has also been criticized for not letting students know when the examinations are happening or for delaying it to accommodate exam organizers. Students should be able to take the exam without having to worry about the time zone, or about if the exam was scheduled during winter or summer. A student can even miss the exa mination with hardly any consequences. The college has never made this part of its promises. Most universities have systems for monitoring the progress of students in their respective schools during the school year. Schools are also expected to pass on all results to parents, their teachers and other institutions. It is clear that both the students and the college authorities would benefit from a system that can trace students' progress, that can let them know when the examination is taking place, and the results that are made available to them.Students of Bihar College have not enjoyed any of these rights. Instead, their learning experience has been degraded to the point that they were not even aware of their rights. Their progress has been marred by lack of communication. A few students at a time are usually notified when the exams are taking place, and the results made available, but there has been little effort put into ensuring that every student can get the maximum possible edu cation.Instead of receiving the expected results, many students are forced to wait for some weeks, sometimes months, for the results of their exam results. These students are not in a position to obtain any benefits. They do not know the date of the results and have to sit up all night to make sure that they do not miss their appointment. This is unacceptable, especially for students who have worked very hard and have shown great potential. The only alternative to this situation, which is basically correct, is to ensure that the College in Bihar does not forget to print question papers for the exams. Every student should be given the same chance to learn as anyone else. This would ensure that their performance is comparable to that of students from other institutions. There is nothing wrong with making a promise, but the College should be making good on this.
